Our History
David Boyle has been working with his father, Richard Boyle, and brother, Thomas Boyle, for close to 20 years in the family's business, Autumn Properties, a real estate and construction firm on Route 10 in Easthampton.
I wouldn't trade it for anything," said David Boyle, who joined the company at 22, shortly after graduating from college.
When his father established the business in 1968, it managed one property-, now the company oversees more than 20 properties in Easthampton, Northampton and Southampton. Over the years, father, sons - and daughter Melissa, 34, who began working with them about four years ago - took on different aspects of the business.
David Boyle, 41, said he tends to have a good grasp of details, so he coordinates project-planning from the office. His brother, who is 40, spends his time in the field, working directly with subcontractors. Melissa handles marketing. And their father, 61, keeps an eye on the overall picture, although he's cut back on his hours in recent years.
Family dynamics definitely played a part in the company's growth, said David Boyle.
"My father's personality and mine are different," he said. While he tends to procrastinate and take a laid-back approach, his father is more assertive, said Boyle. When they were new in the business and younger, he and his brother sometimes challenged their father's instructions, he said.
I was more outspoken," Boyle said, "and I got flack for it." Even so, he said it was important for him and his brother to establish their independence as decision-makers. "You have to get the training wheels off and do your own thing."
